The National Honor Society (NHS) is a nationally recognized organization that represents not only academic excellence but also commitment to service, character, and leadership. Members of the NHS tend to represent the most active and dedicated students in the school, who are capable of balancing academic demands and volunteer responsibilities. They also have a reputation among adults and peers as leaders and role models.

Therefore, as members of the Governor Thomas Johnson High School (GTJHS) NHS chapter, students are required to meet the following expectations
  1. Complete a minimum of 10 hours of community service per school semester. Community service logs will be available on the GTJHS NHS webpage, tjhsnhs.wikispaces.com and club bulletin board.
    • At least 3 of the 10 hours need to be completed through NHS-sponsored activities.
    • For the fall semester, a maximum of 5 hours may be included from preceding summer.
    • The due dates for the community service logs are tentatively:

  • § Fall Semester: January 18, 2013
  • § Spring Semester: May 24, 2013 (Seniors) June 17, 2013 (Juniors)

2. Attend monthly meetings. Club dates are listed on the club day passes.
3. Maintain a grade point average (GPA) of 3.50 or higher and maintain the high behavioral expectations necessary for membership.
4. Pay annual dues of $10 per member per each year of membership.
5. Attend the NHS induction ceremony on Nov. 7, 2012.
6. Actively contribute to a NHS volunteer committee or a tutor group.
7. Uphold the highest levels of respect, honesty and character in my school and community, with peers and adults.
